One in six people over the age of 80 will develop dementia. Learn the fundamentals of dementia and how to care for people with this progressive syndrome that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. Increase your knowledge in alternative activity interventions, enhancing quality of life and techniques to prevent or reduce difficult care situations. Geared toward caregivers, activity directors, health care employees, front line staff and first responders. This course will prepare those pursuing Certified Dementia Practitioner ® certification. Instructor, Mary Horstman, holds a BA, RN, MBA, CADDCT, BNAT-1 and also graduated from the Nursing Program at Harper College. She earned her BA at Duquesne University and her MBA at the University of Notre Dame. She is certified as a Dementia Practitioner Trainer by the National Council of Dementia Practitioners. While attending Nursing school, Mary realized her heart was with geriatric patients. She began her nursing career at Alexian Brothers Mental Health Hospital as a Geriatric Psych nurse. Later, she served as Nurse Manager at a Home Care Agency, where she developed caregiver training for Alzheimer’s clients. She has been teaching at Harper College’s Certified Nursing Assistant program for the past ten years.
